Wow! I installed Vista yesterday and I am impressed with its responsiveness and looks (reminds me of a nice Linux desktop).
I just installed my Epson Stylus Photo R300 and it could not have been easier. I really don't think it took me 15 seconds to do it. A few clicks and I had a nice test page in hand.
IE 7 has a few bugs-- stops responding to left clicks when surfing this forum for example and crashed when I was surfing the photo sites (pbase, smugmug, etc.).
I installed the Java runtime and it works ok.
I was thinking about getting the Office 2007 and installing it.
I am wondering about which antivirus to try. I was going to get Avast but a security window in Vista said the site certificate didn't match and recommended I don't download it, so I didn't (I don't know what to do about that). I was going to download Trend Micro Beta but I didn't like giving them my telephone number (I gave them a generic 555... but never found a button to click on to download it), so I haven't got that either.
Just my observation so far.

Printer install...
Printer driver install problem. System specs.: AMD64 3.0,Via chipset, OS Windows Vista Beta2 x64 5384, Printer HP Photosmart 7150 Problem: Windows Vista recognizes printer and the wizard asks for driver install and since it cannot find a driver (even when pointed to HP windows 64 driver 5.64.0.17) refers me to HP which does not have any driver for vista. Attempting to install the above driver through .exe with Run as.. in windows XP is halted with a dialog box stating that it is a wrong OS. The HP’s suggested method to install as Deskjet 990c fails. Any suggestions? Unrealistic to expect help from Microsoft.

It can install as a 990c. That's what I did with my 7150. As long as device manager doesn't have HPGU11 or something like that set up for the printer else its a pain. You should have 2 menu items in dev mnger called IEE.. something or other (I forget the names) and when opened both with say photosmart 7150 dot4*** ... the very top one (first listing) upgrade the driver by selecting from list not search and choose IEE*** compatible printer, the second IEE*** change photosmart 7150 to USB Printer Support. Now the dev mgr should refresh, the 2 IEE*** setting should vanish and in the USB section of dev mgr you should now have a listing "USB Printer Support". Now go into Control Panel/Printers and add printer.. again choose from the list, select HP and add the 990c. Once that's added, go to the 990c properties, Ports, and change the port to USB Virtual Printer port. Then try a test page. Sorry my explanation is so sucky, I'm recalling this from memory.

You are the man! Thank you so much! This worked perfectly...if i didn't have to get to work, I would rewrite your instructions into a nice step by step writeup...it was a bit hard to read;)
Thanks again!

It really sounds like a mobo problem to me. If any USB device makes this happen, then you might be shorting something. If only one device causes the outage, then I'd replace the device.

In one of my Vistas 6 files were missing in the first directory and one driver in second.
Although I fixed that it did not resolve the story completely. I had this problem for many years in XP and then in Vista.
What I ended up doing after a person from another forum suggested me to do was to purchase a Belkin Internal 5-Port USB PCI card. He purchased Belkin's. I did not quite trust the maker but went for his pointer. It resolved the eissue completely. I removed a firewire PCI card in the back that I never used and plugged in Belkin. It isntalled itself and I've never had any problems since.
This card and similar cards by other makers allow for the 5-th USB port to be engaged. It is not exposed to the elements. It faces the internals of the computer. However, if you have a floppy you do not need you can buy another External USB card (not PCI) and mount it up front ripping off the floppy drive. Thus you will have 8 fully functional USB ports and they will all work.
I did it on 2 machines so far. I do not need to use the 5th, internal port. I now have plenty. This doesn't always happen but probably 75% of the time.
Any thoughts?
